Bulacan to enjoy potable water from Angat Dam

Ramon Efren Lazaro - The Philippine Star

MALOLOS, Philippines – Residents of Bulacan, who depend mostly on ground water supplied by local water districts, may soon enjoy potable water from Angat Dam.

Only a small portion of the province, particularly those near Metro Manila, is currently enjoying potable water supplied by the concessionaires of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).

The water concessionaires source their potable water from Angat Dam for use of Metro Manila households.

Gov. Wilhelmino Sy-Alvarado told The STAR the said situation would change as the MWSS and the provincial government will sign an agreement for the implementation of the Bulacan bulk water supply project, which will provide potable water to different water districts in the province.

“This is one of two water rights that Bulacan has been lobbying. The other is the natural wealth tax the provincial government is trying to collect from MWSS,” Alvarado said.

With the project, local water districts will stop extracting groundwater, thereby reducing if not totally eliminating soil subsidence in the coastal municipalities.

Under the agreement, the MWSS will provide potable water, which will be distributed by local water districts to their consumers.

Bidding for the project has been conducted and was won by the San Miguel Corp. and K Water consortium.
