‘Electricification of rural households almost complete’

MANILA, Philippines - The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has almost accomplished its targets under the Sitio Electrification Program (SEP).

In a statement issued yesterday, the NEA said 30,023 sitios had been energized last month, bringing the electrification level to 97.66 percent nationwide.

Consumer connection was raised to 11.076 million with 440,360 additional beneficiaries this year, the agency added.

NEA administrator Edita Bueno said these accomplishments affirm the strength of the partnership of the agency and the electric cooperatives in bringing electricity to a majority of sitios and helping its residents gain access to basic social services and livelihood opportunities.

The NEA is eyeing the  electrification of 32,441 sitios in the first quarter of 2016, ahead of its original target before the end of President Aquino’s term in June.

The government alloted a P22.31-billion budget for the SEP, which is anchored on the household electrification plan of the Department of Energy (DOE).
