11 volcanic quakes recorded at Kanlaon

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island yesterday.

Phivolcs said the volcano also spewed steam and ash plumes that rose up to 150 meters above the crater yesterday morning.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum on Tuesday said there were no signs of Kanlaon’s major or hazardous eruption.

Kanlaon was placed under Alert Level 1 on Tuesday following a steam explosion Monday night.

Phivolcs reiterated its warning to the public against entering the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Pilots were advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit.
