MANILA, Philippines – Chemicals spilled on Sunday from a factory making plastic products in Quezon City, causing a foul smell to affect parts of Pasig City, particularly Barangay Manggahan.

Pasig residents complained of the bad smell likened to the smell of rugby, causing dizziness to some residents. This was later on determined by Quezon City Rescue as a chemical spill in a factory in Bagumbayan, Quezon City.

According to the Pasig City Official Information Center, the chemical that leaked was monomer, used for making plastic products. They also identified the company name of the factory as Hemress Inc.

Pasig City assured that they are already coordinating with the Quezon City Risk Reduction Management Office regarding the situation.

“As per Erwin Valdez ng Quezon City Rescue galing po sa isang factory Chemical Spill sa Bagumbayan, Quezon City. Nakipagcoordinate na din po kami sa Quezon City DRRMO,” Pasig Information Center said on its Twitter account.

As residents complained of the health risk of the chemical spill, the Pasig City government said they also have an evacuation area ready in case hospitals get full. Residents are asked to coordinate with barangay officials for assistance.

Reports said the Bureau of Fire Protection are currently handling the situation and anticipating to end their operation within two days.
