Suspect in slay of family of 3 surrenders
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – An online game addict tagged in the killing of three members of a family operating an Internet café in Isabela town, Negros Occidental, surrendered to authorities on Friday.
Jemar Carpio sent surrender feelers to the police through his parents. He was picked up by the police at the Balogo Port in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental at around 5 a.m.
Carpio stabbed dead Ricardo Carpentero, 57; his wife Consuelo, 59, and their son Carlo, 23, after he was not allowed to use a computer at the victims’ shop in Barangay Cansalongon on Nov. 7.
Another family member, Sheila Mae, 25, was taken to the hospital for treatment of stab wounds.
Carlo’s seven-year-old son survived after he hid under the bed.
Town police chief Senior Inspector Anthony Grande presented Carpio to Mayor Enrique Montilla III, who ordered a manhunt for the suspect.
The suspect told journalists he did not know why he killed the victims and he regrets it. He said he decided to surrender because he could no longer stand the thought of being hunted by the police.
Carpio said he was bothered by his conscience. He said after the killing, he hid in nearby Barangay San Agustin, where he stayed for four days, before proceeding to Guihulngan.
The suspect said he later went to Cebu and stayed with a relative. He said he is willing to face the consequences of his actions.
