Zamboanga siege victims receive boats

Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Residents displaced by the Zamboanga siege in 2013 have received 100 bancas from the Canadian government, Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar announced on Monday.

Salazar said the internally displaced persons are temporarily sheltered at the transitory site of Masepla in Barangay Mampang.

Aside from the boats, three docking sites have also been provided for them.

The project was initiated by the International Office for the Migration (IOM) and funded by the Canadian government.

The IOM has been assisting the local government in providing shelters to residents who fled from their homes when members of the Moro National Liberation Front tried to take control of the city.

The beneficiaries, who are mostly from the Sama and Badjao tribes, have resorted to begging after they lost their livelihood following the 21-day siege that devastated their villages.
