NORTH COTABATO, Philippines – A farmer said to be suffering from a mental illness landed in jail for carrying a gun on his way to a doctor in Davao City on Friday.

Patrocinio Bulario, 73, did not resist when members of the Kidapawan City police arrested him at a checkpoint for possession of a 9mm pistol.

Bulario, who was in a van driven by his son Jessie, will be charged with illegal possession of firearms, according to city police chief Superintendent John Calinga.

Investigators also held Jessie, an employee of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, for questioning.

Jessie told police he was bringing his father to a neurologist in Davao City.
