NPA slain in Davao clash
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrilla was killed in an encounter with government security forces in Lupon, Davao Oriental on Wednesday.
Authorities have yet to identify the fatality, whose remains have yet to be claimed by relatives.
Reports said troopers belonging to the Marine 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion recovered three rifles and an improvised explosive device after the firefight that lasted 45 minutes in Barangay Calapagan.
The troopers were on patrol in Sitio Yauri when they were waylaid by at least 30 rebels, who fled toward the jungle.
Villagers have requested the military to conduct patrols in the area due to the presence of unidentified armed men.
Reports said the insurgents took with them their wounded comrades as they fled the area.
