LGUs urged to support World Rabies Day
MANILA, Philippines - Governors and mayors all over the country are urged to support the World Rabies Day celebration on Sept. 28, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said over the weekend.
A study showed that the Philippines is one of 10 countries in the world with a high incidence of rabies cases.
The disease is responsible for an estimated 59,000 human deaths per year worldwide.
In the Philippines, rabies infection caused by canine bites accounts for 84 percent or around 300 to 400 deaths per year as of 2014.
One of the reasons for the increasing number of deaths due to rabies infection is the lack of awareness on proper pet vaccination.
DILG Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento said this year’s celebration would be highlighted by the declaration of rabies-free zones, mass dog vaccination, and dog walk and pet blessing at the Quezon Memorial Circle.
Sarmiento said local chief executives are urged to enact ordinances supporting the rabies control program.
