Manila vendors warn of 'market holiday' on Monday

MANILA, Philippines - Hundreds of vendors and stall owners in several public markets in Manila City will go on a 'market holiday' on September 14 to protest the impending demolition and privatization of the establishments.

Members of the newly formed group of market vendors and stall owners, Save Manila Public Market Alliance (SAMPAL), which opposes privatization of 17 Manila public markets said they will close shop Monday next week.

The group is protesting the Manila Joint Venture Ordinance 8346 wherein the city government will offer publicly owned businesses, social services and markets for joint ventures with private firms.

The localordinance also covers highways, ports, housing, land reclamation projects, education and school facilities, hospitals and health services.

SAMPAL  also called on affected market-goers and consumers to prepare earlier for the  market holiday when stall owners and vendors will close their stalls.

To date, participating markets for the market holiday include Sampaloc Market, Trabajo Market, Quinta Market, Pritil Market, Dagonoy Market, San Andres Market and Sta. Ana Market.

During the market holiday, vendors will march to Manila City Hall and respond to Mayor Joseph Estrada’s statement that demolitions and privatizations of public market will push through.
