Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Sarangani town in Davao Occidental yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake occurred at 9:18 a.m. with no reported intensities, Phivolcs said.

The epicenter of the quake was 155 kilometers southwest of Sarangani. It had a depth of 312 kms and was tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs allayed fears of a tsunami, but said aftershocks were expected from the quake.

The agency also recorded quakes with magnitudes of 2 to 3.5 in Batanes, Batangas and Surigao del Norte yesterday.
