Ifugao holiday declared

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Malacañang has declared Sept. 2 a special non-working holiday in the province of Ifugao to mark the 70th year since the surrender of Japanese general Tomoyuki Yamashita in Kiangan town.

Yamashita’s surrender in 1945 marked the end of World War II in the Pacific.

In signing Proclamation 1095, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. said the holiday would give the people of Ifugao the opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion. 

The province has been commemorating “Victory Day” since Sept. 2, 1991 to honor Filipino and American soldiers, and Ifugao guerrillas, including the women who served in the Women’s Auxiliary Service during World War II.
