Canada wastes stuck in Tarlac landfill

CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga, Philippines – Eight shipping containers of waste from Canada remain at a sanitary landfill in Capas, Tarlac.

Capas Mayor Antonio Rodriguez said the shipping containers were stuck at the gate of the Kalangitan landfill after the Tarlac government suspended its disposal.

“There is some smell wafting from the containers…but it’s not too much because the containers have remained sealed, “ Rodriguez said.

He said the landfill is being monitored round-the-clock to ensure that the contents of the containers are not thrown in the landfill.

Rodriguez said representatives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources informed them that the shipping containers would be transferred at a still undisclosed location next month.

He said the Kalangitan landfill faces closure if proven that the Metro Clark Waste Management Corp. violated the terms of an agreement with the provincial government. He said wastes outside Central Luzon, Metro Manila and Baguio City could not be buried at the landfill.

The DENR had said there are still 300 shipping containers of Canada garbage at the ports in Subic and Manila.

Twenty-nine shipping containers of Canada waste have been dumped at the Capas landfill.
