DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau (MGB) has ordered the suspension of a nickel mining operation in Barangay Kauswagan in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental.
The MGB in Region 11 issued the suspension order on July 31 after investigation showed that nickel extraction by Golden Summit Mining Co. in the area has no permit, contract or mineral agreement with either the MGB or the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The investigating team is composed of agents of the National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police and Department of Justice (DOJ) and MGB personnel.
Under the Mining Act, the absence of a permit, contract or mineral agreement with the government is prima facie evidence of illegal mining and a complaint for theft of minerals maybe filed against the persons involved.
The MGB, NBI and DOJ are gathering additional evidence in preparation for the filing of charges against Golden Summit Mining Co.
