AFP on red alert for NPA's 46th founding anniversary

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star
MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will be placed on red alert starting tomorrow, March 28, Saturday, for the 46th founding anniversary of the New People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

AFP spokesman Lt. Col.  Harold Cabunoc said the AFP red alert status will be effective until March 30, Monday.

"The Armed Forces of the Philippines is ready to perform its mandated task to protect the people against any armed threats including NPA bandits who launch armed attacks during their founding anniversary," Cabunoc said in a statement.

He said the military is working closely with its counterparts in the Philippine National Police "in monitoring the NPA and in taking preemptive measures to thwart their plans such as mounting violent attacks against communities and government installations."

The NPA or the Bagong Hukbong Bayan was founded in Mar. 29, 1969, with Bernabe Buscayno as its first leader.
