Hotline launched to protect women, kids

Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines – The city government of Dagupan on Friday launched a hotline to protect women and children against any form of violence.

Residents may call or send text messages to 0947-508-8888 to report any violence against women and children (VAWC).

“The VAWC hotline is another step to protect women and children as the city government values their rights,” said Mayor Belen Fernandez.

Fernandez said that many women became victims of violence because they have no financial power.

“Financial empowerment is the key to free women from the ills of domestic issues. Once a woman earns, she becomes a better person,” she said.

Marrien Mejia, the city’s gender and development officer, said the hotline would provide access for women who are victims of abuse, as well as create awareness to stop any form of violence against them and the children.

“With the VAWC hotline, we can reach out to women and children who need counseling, legal advice and free health checkup if needed.” Mejia said.

The city information office said the launch of the VAWC hotline was among the highlights of the Women’s Summit, which is part of this year’s National Women’s Month celebration.

Fernandez said women in Dagupan are active in politics and in decision- and-policy-making processes in government.
