Phivolcs: Philippines not affected by Japan quake
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines will not be affected by tsunamis following the 6.9-magnitude earthquake off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on Tuesday, the state volcanology bureau said.
"There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a 7:20 a.m. advisory.
Phivolcs' records show the quake that struck off Iwata in northeast Japan occurred at 7:05 a.m. Philippine time and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
"No destructive Pacific-wide threat exist based on the historical and tsunami data," Phivolcs said.
The bureau, however, also said that local tsunamis may be generated by the major earthquake up to 100 kilometers from the epicenter.

The northernmost tip of the Philippines is approximately 3,000 kilometers from the quake's center.
