Volcano poses risk to Bukidnon university

MALAYBALAY CITY, Philippines – The Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag, Bukidnon is within the danger zone of an active volcano, an official of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) based in Northern Mindanao said yesterday.

In an interview with KBP Bukidnon Interaction radio, Marcial Labininay said the Musuan Peak could erupt anytime.

CMU faculty member Gideon Cabahug Jr. said Labininay’s claims were alarming but unacceptable.

The Musuan Peak, which had been dormant since 1867, covers the 3,080-hectare property of the university and a cattle ranch.

A multimillion-peso facility of the Philippine Carabao Center is also at the volcano’s foot.

Labininay cited the Mt. Pinatubo in Luzon, which was declared inactive but devastated the areas surrounding it when it erupted in 1991. He said Phivolcs should regularly monitor the Musuan Peak.
