MANILA, Philippines - The Southern Police District (SPD) on Friday morning destroyed some P100,000 worth of confiscated illegal fireworks.
The destruction of the illegal fireworks at the grounds of the SPD headquarters in Taguig City also coincided with the removal of the masking tapes from the muzzles of the police officers’ service firearms.
It would be recalled that the guns of police officers were earlier taped shut as a deterrent from illegally firing them during the holiday season, especially during the New Year’s eve revelry.
According to SPD spokesman, Supt. Jenny Tecson, the illegal firecrackers were from Las Pinas, Pateros, Makati, Muntinlupa, Paranaque and Taguig.
Tecson said the largest haul of seized illegal firecrackers came from Parañaque which filled-up a pick-up truck. Tecson added that the illegal firecrackers seized from Parañaque have a street value of P50,000.
Just before New Year’s eve, the SPD launched a crackdown against illegal firecrackers in its area of coverage.
Tecson said most of the illegal firecrackers were initially seized by police from the Palar Market, in New Lower Bicutan, and at the Maharlika Village, all located in Taguig City.
