Ex-mayor’s car rams trike; 1 dead

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A passenger died while a driver was injured when their tricycle was rammed by a sport utility vehicle driven by a former mayor in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte Friday.

Former Bangui town mayor Wilfred Cases surrendered to authorities after the accident that resulted in the death of Jason Sugi and injury to Kennedy Salvador, said case investigator Police Officer 2 Mario Corcoro.

Cases said he failed to notice the tricycle when a light from another vehicle hit his eyes. He offered to help in the burial and medical expenses of the victims.

Meanwhile, in Isabela, three persons died in two separate vehicular accidents in the towns of Roxas and Alicia Friday night.

Melanio Sagun Jr. and Aristotle Sinense were declared dead on arrival at a hospital after their tricycle collided with a dump truck driven by Michael Sumulat in Roxas town.

Sumulat fled after the incident but was arrested in a checkpoint in Burgos town.

In Alicia, bus driver Benito Asuncion said he tried but failed to avoid hitting a tricycle driven by Sherwin Tamundong, 33, in Barangay San Fernando.

Tamundong died at the scene while Asuncion surrendered to responding police officers.
