2 BIFF men killed in Maguindanao clash
MANILA, Philippines - Government troops killed two suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) while patrolling the remote area in Maguindanao Wednesday afternoon.
The military said soldiers from the Philippine Army's 45th Infantry Battalion were conducting route security operations around 2:25 p.m. at Barangay Maitumaig, Datu Unsay town when they were fired upon by two BIFF members when the group reached the junction going to Sitio Kyamco.
The soldiers retaliated but were also fired upon by another group of armed men positioned near the Regional Mobile Group outpost in the area, the military added.
Reinforcements from the government side, including the local policemen, rushed to the scene and engaged the armed group in a 15-minute firefight.
After the gunbattle, authorities recovered the bodies of Saptual Unti and a certain Titik Lupong, both allegedly members of the BIFF.
No one was wounded on the government side during the encounter.
Government troops recovered from the scene the red motorcycle used by the two men, a cal. 45 pistol, a handgrenade, and several empty bullet shells.
