Manhunt on for American who bolted BI jail

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A manhunt was launched yesterday for an American who escaped from a detention cell of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Davao City on Sunday.

BI Commissioner Siegfred Mison said intelligence operatives were hunting for Douglas Brent Jackson, who is facing theft charges in the United States.

Some BI personnel reportedly helped Jackson escape.

Mison has ordered an investigation into the incident, said BI spokesperson Elaine Tan.

“We will make sure that appropriate sanctions will be meted to all personnel who helped Jackson escape,” she said.

Investigators said Jackson sawed the iron grills of the window. “It appears that Jackson planned the escape with the help of some friends from BI,” Tan said.

Last Aug. 29, Jackson was issued a summary deportation order for being a fugitive. The order was not implemented as the American is facing an estafa case in Davao.
