Weak crater glow seen from Mayon

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A weak crater glow was seen from the mouth of Mount Mayon on Wednesday morning as the eruption of the volcano remains possible.

"Weak crater glow was briefly observed early this morning," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its update on the volcano's activity issued at 8 a.m.

Phivolcs said it recorded only one rock fall event since Tuesday morning and moderate emission of white steam from the volcano was observed.

The agency said that these observation, including the 187 tons per day of sulfur dioxide flux and the ground deformation at the base of the volcano's edifice indicate that it is "still in a state of unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma."

Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over the volcano, which means the magma is at the crater and a hazardous eruption is possible.

The volcano's 6-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and the 7-kilometer extended danger zone on the southeastern flank remain off-limits.
