John Unson - The Philippine Star

MAGUINDANAO – A 10-year-old girl drowned Wednesday in rampaging floodwaters that swept through 10 villages in Sultan Kudarat town, spawned by continuous rains since Tuesday.

The Humanitarian Emergency Assistance and Relief Team (HEART) of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said in a statement on Thursday that the fatality, Jing Laure, was swept by floodwaters as she was trying to climb to the roof of their house.

The HEART said that 9,800 villagers in 10 village in Sultan Kudarat were affected by the flashflood.

All of the affected areas are located along rivers that swelled and overflowed due to three days of continuous heavy rains in the province.

HEART workers are now preparing individual packs of cereal rations and other relief supplies for distribution to the flood victims.
