The encounter happened around 6 a.m. when government forces arrived in the area. The gunmen were reportedly New People's Army remnants of a group called Armadong Makikibakang Masa under Efren Arquillo.
After the clash, authorities recovered from the scene several high powered firearms, including an M16 assault rifle, an UZI machine pistol, a .38 revolver, two shotguns, two hand grenades, and assorted ammunition.
