TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – Six persons died while two others were injured when their tricycle collided with a sport utility vehicle (SUV) in this city Friday night.

Tricycle driver James Calimag, 25, died at the scene while his passengers Loreta Perciano, 49; Annie Pagalilauan, 19; Reyniemar Marribay, 19; Jenmar Soriano, 26, and Diamond Nicole Talang, 22, were declared dead on arrival at the People’s Emergency Hospital and the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC).

Two others – Jezrill Como, 21; and Jeozo Tumanguil, 18 – were in critical condition at the CVMC.

City police chief Superintendent Julius Ordonio said the victims were heading home to Penablanca town when the accident occurred in Barangay Larion Bajo at around 8:30 p.m.

Investigators said the SUV, a Mitsubishi Montero driven by businessman Resty Pillos, tried to overtake another vehicle.

The impact threw the victims several meters.

Pillos, who suffered head injuries, was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He tested negative for alcohol.
