MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed a team of 60 women traffic enforcers to enforce traffic discipline on motorists along EDSA.
Crisanto Saruca, head of the MMDA’s Traffic Discipline Office said the deployment of the “Task Force EDSA Lady Auxiliary Platoon” started on Monday.
Saruca said the MMDA believes women traffic enforcers or what the agency now calls as “traffic constables” could be better at the job as compared to their male counterparts. Saruca said motorists are more likely to follow traffic rules at the sight of female traffic enforcers.
“That is one of the reasons (for the deployment of the task force). Also, they are young and are trained in traffic management and control,” said Saruca.
The task force, said Saruca, will be seen on EDSA from Monday to Friday on fixed posts at Ayala Avenue, Gil Puyat (Buendia), Guadalupe, Shaw Boulevard, Ortigas and Cubao from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays.
“They will be on standby for deployment in other parts of EDSA when needed on the other days,” Saruca said.
Meanwhile, Saruca said the MMDA would augment the all-women task force with additional enforcers on motorcyles to be deployed on EDSA’s northbound (going to Quezon City) lane and along Quezon Avenue during the rush hour period.
