Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Eighty-one Chinese men believed working illegally at a power plant in Calaca, Batangas were turned over to the Bureau of Immigration (BI) last Friday.

The 81 Chinese were among those who were rounded up and invited for questioning by the National Bureau of Investigation, the BI and the Department of Labor and Employment on suspicion they were illegally working in the Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp. owned by DMCI Holdings Inc.

The 81 foreigners, who were taken by the authorities last Aug. 28, were transferred to the BI at around 3 p.m.

BI spokesperson Elaine Tan said they have yet to check the status of the Chinese workers.

Tan said the BI is also investigating how the foreigners entered the country and if their employer or recruiter committed any offense.
