Man takes toddler hostage

LAGUNA, Philippines – A police officer shot dead a man who took a one-year-old boy hostage in Biñan City yesterday morning.

Romy Sulayao, 50, died at the scene from a gunshot wound in the head, said Superintendent Noel Alino, Biñan City police chief.

Alino said Sulayao, who was a visitor of the victim’s family, took a knife and threatened to stab the boy at around 7:30 a.m.

The suspect took the victim to the roof of a house near a public market in Barangay Timba. Responding police officers tried but failed to convince the suspect to release the boy.

Reports said Sulayao was about to stab the victim when a police officer shot him.
