Tornado hits Pampanga village

Ding Cervantes - The Philippine Star

MACABEBE, Pampanga, Philippines - A tornado swept through a village in this town Saturday night, destroying 19 houses.

Authorities said no fatalities were reported although some residents suffered injuries.

The tornado left about 110 individuals homeless as it ripped away roofs and flattened houses that were made mostly of light materials.

Police said the tornado first appeared as a dark funnel over Pampanga Bay before it headed toward Sitio Mindanao in Barangay Esteban at about 6 p.m.

“The residents immediately evacuated, preventing casualties,” the report said.

The tornado swept through the community for 30 minutes. Residents said it was more powerful than the last one that previously ravaged the area.

Local officials have yet to determine the damage left by the disaster.

Those who lost their homes were sheltered in a gymnasium.
