The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A municipal police chief in Samar was shot dead by a motorcycle-riding man who he had accosted near a bar in Tacloban City before dawn Tuesday.

Reports reaching Camp Crame said Senior Inspector Lucino Lopido, 49, police chief of Paranas town, died from four bullet wounds.

“(Lopido) was reportedly conducting a surveillance on a man who immediately opened fire at (him),” said Senior Superintendent Domingo Cabillan, Tacloban City police chief.

Responding policemen found the assailant’s motorcycle abandoned at the crime scene and recovered five empty shells from a 9-mm pistol.

Witnesses merely described Lopido’s killer as wearing a black jacket and baseball cap. – Cecille Suerte Felipe, Ricky Bautista
