SC upholds CamSur gov’s election with finality

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court (SC) has upheld with finality the election of Camarines Sur Gov. Miguel Villafuerte, denying the appeal of his grandfather and rival in the 2013 race, former governor and congressman Luis Villafuerte.

In a two-page resolution handed down last July 8 but released only yesterday, the SC stood firm on its decision last February affirming last year’s ruling of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) that dismissed the disqualification petition filed by the elder Villafuerte against his grandson.

The SC junked the motion for reconsideration of the former congressman for lack of merit.

“We find the same to be a rehash of the arguments advanced by petitioner in their petition which we have already considered and passed upon in our decision,” read the notice of resolution signed by lawyer Enriqueta Vidal, SC clerk of court.

Last Feb. 25, the SC denied the elder Villafuerte’s petition for certiorari with prayer for the issuance of a writ of preliminary injunction and/or temporary restraining order against the Comelec’s April 1, 2013 resolution.
