Girl saves siblings from fire

John Unson - The Philippine Star

KORONADAL CITY, Philippines - A 12-year-old girl courageously saved her five younger siblings from a fire that razed their house before dawn Wednesday in Barangay Zone 4 in Koronadal City.

Neighbors said Renamae Serrano managed to guide her brothers and sisters out of their burning house holding hands together after having been awakened by suffocating smoke and heat as the fire spread from their living room to the kitchen.

Responding policemen and members of the local fire bureau immediately turned over the children to barangay officials, who, in turn provided them with food and drinking water.

Fire probers said the children’s parents were both in nearby Tupi town in South Cotabato when their house was hit by the fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of fire.
