More relief workers sent to flooded areas in Maguindanao

John Unson - The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines – Government agencies yesterday dispatched more relief workers and food rations to flooded barangays in 13 Maguindanao towns, where 10,437 villagers have been stranded in their houses in low-lying corn and rice fields.

The floods have destroyed close to P1 million worth of ready-to-harvest rice and corn crops in Datu Piang and Kabuntalan towns.

Laisa Alamia, executive secretary of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said workers of the regional inter-agency Humanitarian Emergency Assistance and Relief Team have been dispatched to help attend to the needs of the villagers in the flood-stricken areas.

Alamia said majority of the affected families have not evacuated since the floodwaters are not alarmingly deep and that they live in typical Moro stilt houses.
