Makati police prevents British woman's suicide

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Members of the Makati City police prevented a 26-year-old British woman from jumping to her death in Barangay Poblacion, Tuesday morning.

Senior Superintendent Jaime Santos, acting Makati City police chief, said Nathali Lian Islam threatened to jump off the second floor terrace of the Virra Condominium along P. Burgos Street at about 9:15 a.m.

Santos said a rescue team composed of officers from the Police Substation 6, Makati Rescue and the Special Reaction Unit of the Makati Fire Department arrived at the scene and tried to convince Islam to go down.

Santos said Islam, who appeared to be depressed, then sat on the edge of the terrace and threatened to jump.

He said that Islam suddenly started crying as she sat on the ledge, which opened an opportunity for the rescue team's members to approach and take her down safely.

Islam was then brought to the Ospital ng Makati for treatment, said Santos.
