Nurses in baby fall incident suspended

The Philippine Star

COTABATO CITY, Philippines– Several nurses who were on duty when a newly-born infant died after falling on  the floor of the Cotabato Regional Medical Center (CRMC) here on May 20 due to their alleged negligence were suspended.

Catholic station dxMS here announced on Thursday that the chief of the CRMC, physician Helen Yambao, had confirmed the suspension of the nurses involved in the mishap, to pave the way for an impartial probe on the incident.

Carlos Bautista, anchor of the morning public affairs program of dxMS, said on Thursday morning that Yambao confirmed the suspension of all the nurses on duty when the pregnant Marilyn Galapin, 27, gave birth to a male child that fell on the floor.

The premature baby died several hours later.

Galapin is from the non-Moro ethnic Teduray tribe in North Upi town in Maguindanao.

North Upi Mayor Ramon Piang, who is a Teduray tribal chieftain, lauds the decision of the  CRMC  to suspend the nurses.

"But our search for justice will not end with that suspension order alone. We still have to wait for the outcome of the investigation and the administrative action corresponding to whatever offense there was," Piang said.

Yambao had earlier said the child died from having been born prematurely, and not from the fall.

Fatima Kanakan director of the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP) for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, said they also support the investigation initiated by the CRMC management.

“We’ll just have to patiently wait. Meantime we need to reflect on how to avoid a repeat of that incident,” said Kanakan, who is of mixed Teduray and Moro descent.

ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman told The Star on Wednesday that the Regional Human Rights Commission will also conduct a probe of the incident.

“We are hoping the result of the CRMC’s investigation on the incident will soon be out," Hataman said. - John Unson
