4 dead, 10 hurt as truck plunges into ravine

The Philippine Star

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – Four construction workers were killed while 10 others were injured when their truck fell into a ravine in Majayjay town this province early yesterday morning, police said.

Senior Inspector Marcelito Marcial, Majayjay police chief, identified the fatalities as Ronald Grencio, Rolan Grencio, Reynaldo Millet and Elmer Mareveles.

Marcial said the victims, who worked for Orguer Trading and Construction, were on their way to Sariaya, Quezon for a project, when the driver of their Isuzu Elf truck lost control of the wheel, sending the vehicle plunging into an eight-meter deep ravine in Barangay Ilayang Banga at around 5:30 a.m. yesterday.

Marcial said they have yet to determine if a mechanical failure or a lapse on the part of the driver caused the mishap.

The victims were rushed to the Majayjay Hospital and later transferred to the Laguna Provincial Hospital. – With Ed Amoroso
