36 civilians released by rebels in ComVal standoff - report
MANILA, Philippines - Communist rebels have reportedly released around 36 civilians they held hostage to keep at bay pursuing security forces in Compostela Valley.
Quoting Maj. Gen. Domingo Tutaan, spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, a radio report said 10 more civilians have been released by rebels belonging to the Guerilla Front 2 Pulang Bagani Command of the New People's Army Sunday afternoon in Sitio Tabon, Brgy. Panamin, Mabini, Compostela Valley.
The report said that a total of 26 have been earlier released Sunday morning by the communist rebels who hostaged the civilians to keep police and military personnel from engaging them in a firefight.
The still undetermined number of armed gunmen, who still held at least three persons hostage, have used the civilians in the area as human shield since Saturday, the report added.
