Whale shark released in Ilocos

Charlie Lagasca - The Philippine Star

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – A whale shark, or butanding, caught by fishermen off the West Philippine Sea early this week was released into the waters off Ilocos Norte.

Jose Morata, environment and natural resources officer, said the whale shark was healthy and free from injury when they released it along the Pasaleng Bay in Pagudpud town on Wednesday.

He said whale sharks are often seen along the town’s shorelines and has become one of the tourist attractions in the municipality.

Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte’s northernmost town, is one of northern Luzon’s premier tourist destinations, especially during summer because of its white sand beaches.

“The shark was released as soon as it was removed from the net,” Morata said.

Members of the “Salluad PARE” (Pagudpud Active Rangers for Environment) witnessed the release of the fish into the sea. Salluad is a local term for “rescue.”
