MANILA, Philippines - An American was found dead in his room at the Richmond Plaza Hotel in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City yesterday morning.

Hotel personnel found Garett Patrick Motely, 55, at 6 a.m. with a cord around his neck, the other end tied to the ceiling.

They sought the assistance of the Tourist Action Center of the Cebu City police office and the Fuente police station.

Members of the emergency rescue unit said Motely was no longer responsive when they arrived.

Initial investigation showed no sign of foul play, as no external injury was found in Motely and the room was in order.

Aside from the cord, investigators recovered Motley’s passport, two surfboards, a wallet with no cash, assorted documents, Xenon DVD player, pieces of clothing and personal belongings of the victim.

They also found an eviction notice, which showed Motely’s hotel bill amounting to P13,000.

Motely reportedly arrived in the Philippines in August last year.
