LPA to bring rains over Vis-Min

MANILA, Philippines - The low-pressure area (LPA) that briefly became Tropical Depression Caloy will continue to bring rains over the Visayas and Mindanao until Friday, the state weather bureau said yesterday.

Robert Sawi, weather division chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), alerted residents of these regions against possible flashfloods and landslides.

The LPA, which was spotted over Bohol at 11 a.m. yesterday, will continue to bring cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over the Visayas and light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over the Bicol region and Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Sawi said the eastern section of Luzon, particularly Quezon, Aurora, Isabela and Cagayan, will experience light rains due to the tail-end of a cold front.

He said the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will have good weather aside from cloudy skies with slim chance of rain.

Caloy, the third tropical cyclone to enter the country this year, was downgraded to an LPA after making landfall in Surigao del Sur on Saturday.

PAGASA also warned the public against big waves in the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, the southern seaboard of Southern Luzon, and the eastern seaboard of the Visayas due to the surge of the northeasterly wind.

It advised small seacraft and fishing vessels not to venture out into the sea due to the big waves.
