2 new pumping stations in San Juan opened

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday opened two new flood pumping stations in San Juan City.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino and San Juan Mayor Guia Gomez  led the inauguration of the two pumping stations located along Rivera Street in Barangay Rivera and along Morales Street in Barangay Salapan.  

“These additional facilities will complement the Balong Bato pumping station which became operational last year.  Hopefully, these pumping stations will totally spare the city of San Juan from flooding,” Tolentino said.

“Having not just one but three pumping stations here in San Juan will provide great relief for the city government and its residents as it would not just rid San Juan of floods but would also save lives and precious properties,” Tolentino added.

According to the MMDA, the Rivera pumping station has two pumps and a floodwater catchment area measuring 2.8 hectares.  The facility also has a set of trash screen for garbage retrieval.

The Salapan pumping station meanwhile has two pumps that could suck two cubic meters of water per second.  It has a floodwater catchment area of 18 hectares with two sets of trash screen equipment.  

According to the MMDA, a total of 54 flood pumping stations are now located across Metro Manila.
