'Basyang' deaths rise to 6
MANILA, Philippines - The death toll from tropical storm Basyang that hit Visayas region has climbed to six, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday.
In its situational report, the NDRRMC said the death toll increased due to three more fatalities recorded from Cebu province, including a five-year-old boy who died from electrocution.
The NDRRMC also reported that a woman was injured after a a fence collapsed in Talisay City, Cebu. Five persons remained missing, including a Korean when a boat sunk between Camotes Island and Danao City.
Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said more than 9,000 families or over 42,000 individuals were affected by the inclement weather in 38 municipalities, seven cities and nine provinces of Regions 6, 7 ,8 and Caraga.
Of the total affected, more than 5,000 persons were displaced and stayed inside the 32 evacuation centers, the NDRRMC said.
A total of 83 houses were damaged, eight of which were totally destroyed, the NDRRMC said.
The national government and other concerned agencies have already allocated P12.5 million in stand by fund for relief operations for the affected population.
