Canadian ordered jailed for hiding daughter in Dumaguete

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A Canadian national was sentenced to 15 months in jail on Thursday for snatching his daughter from her Brazilian mother and entrusting the child to a stranger in Dumaguete City.

Saskatoon provincial court judge Daryl Labach ruled that 47-year-old Alexander Fiodor Levin was guilty of harboring two-year-old Ieda Alexandra with a Filipino seamstress, Canada's The StarPhoenix report said.

Levin, who was arrested last October, earlier asked the court for lenience as he only hid Ieda out of contempt for her Brazilian mother, Oziene Barbosa, whom Levin had a three-year affair.

Levin said that Barbosa cheated on him with three other men. Levin, however, is also married with four kids in Saskatoon.

He also admitted to fathering another child with a separate Brazilian woman.

The judge called Levin's actions to reflect his "caveman mentality" about women's rights.

"The accused's attitude and action toward women could be described as nothing short of barbaric," Labach said.
