Velasco, ex-Cavite gov, dies of heart attack

CAVITE, Philippines   â€“ Former Cavite governor and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) chief Epimaco Velasco died yesterday morning, a day after he was rushed to the hospital for a heart attack.

Velasco, 79, was rushed to the Divine Grace Hospital in General Trias on Sunday, his family said.

His remains will be brought to the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque and transferred to the Trece Martires Capitol tomorrow.

The wake will be held at his pastoral church in Cavite on Friday. Cremation will follow on Sunday afternoon.

Aside from heading Cavite and the NBI, Velasco had served as chief of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

In May last year, Velasco’s son, Cavite Provincial Prosecutor Emmanuel Velasco, also died of a heart attack.

Velasco was born on Dec. 12, 1935 in Tanza, Cavite. He finished his law degree at the Lyceum of the Philippines in 1960.

He first served as helper of the Manila court in 1955 while studying law. Two years after he graduated, he entered the NBI and became one of its agents. He became director in 1992.
