Girl killed, boy missing in Zamboanga floods

ZAMBOANGA City, Philippines - A girl was killed and a boy went missing after flashfloods struck towns in Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Sur provinces on Monday.

The girl identified as Arlene Abing Fuentes, 14, was found dead in Sinacaban, Misamis Occidental at arond 4 p.m. on Monday. She was swept by floodwaters while fishing with her brother in river in Barangay Cagay-anon.

The missing boy, meanwhile, was identified as 11-year-old Cyrus Jade Batingal, son of Police officer 1 Nemesio Batingal Jr.

The policeman was driving his jeepney loaded 11 other people, including his son, and fertilizers when it was swept by floodwaters while crossing a flooded area in Barangay Lower Salug Datu at around 7:30 a.m.

The jeep was pushed to the river by floodwaters.

The policeman and the 11 other passengers of the jeep were able to swim to safety. Batingal remains missing.

The floods were caused by torrential rains brought on by a low pressure area affecting Visyas and Mindanao.
