PAGASA issues heavy rainfall warning for typhoon-ravaged Leyte

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday morning issued a yellow rainfall warning for the province of Leyte.

The weather bureau's advisory released at 9 a.m. covers Leyte and Southern Leyte, warning that flooding is possible in low lying areas and landslides threaten mountainous areas.

PAGASA advised the public and the disaster risk reduction and management council to monitor the weather condition and watch for the next advisory to be issued later at 12 noon.

Earlier, the agency said the low pressure area (LPA) located in the vicinity of Surigao del Sur will continue to dump moderate to heavy rains in Mindanao and in Eastern and Central Visayas until Tuesday.

PAGASA weather forecaster Samuel Duran told radio dzMM that while the LPA seems to be motionless, it may head for Eastern Visayas and the Bicol region once it finally moves.

The Leyte province and Eastern Visayas bore the brunt of the devastation caused by Super Typhoon "Yolanda," which killed more than 6,100 people while leveling communities in the region with its tsunami-like storm surges.
