Marikina mayor's wife dies on New Year's Day

MANILA, Philippines - The wife of Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman died on Wednesday, the first day of the year.

Without disclosing details of her death, Marikina City's information office released a statement that Amalia Gonzaga de Guzman passed away at 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday in Medical City in Pasig. She was 46.

"Let us also offer prayers for her bereaved husband, Marikina Mayor Del R. De Guzman, and their four children," the statement reads.

The De Guzman matriarch reportedly suffered from lymphoma, a type of cancer attacking blood cells.

Her remains were brought to Premier Chapel A of Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City.
