Guard cited for returning envelope with P15K

John Unson - The Philippine Star

KIDAPAWAN CITY , Philippines   â€“ The city council yesterday cited a security guard for his honesty after he returned an envelope containing P15,000 cash he found on his way to work here.

Emerold Obatay, a guard assigned at the Mercury Drugstore, turned the money over to radio dxND in this city, according to Councilor Gregory Yarra.

The money had been returned to its owner, a certain Mr. Porras, who was touched by the guard’s gesture and gave some amount as reward.

Obatay however, refused to accept the reward saying he was glad to be of help. He said he had thought of keeping the money for himself but the fear of the so-called karma got over him.

“I need money to settle the hospital bills of my daughter who had just died of cancer. But the money I found was not mine,” Obatay said in Cebuano.

Yarra said the city council has asked Mayor Joseph Evangelista to hire Obatay as a regular member of the city civil security group.

“We are certain he would be a good employee of the city overnment. His honesty is worth emulating,” Yarra said.
