Mt. Diwalwal miners warned vs landslides
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Residents at the gold mining site in Mt. Diwalwal, Monkayo, Compostela Valley have been warned anew against landslides and other environmental hazards, particularly with the onset of the rainy season.
Those living in Purok Depot at Mt. Diwalwal were advised to immediately relocate to safer grounds and not wait for any disaster to take place, according to Allen June Buenavista of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Region 10.
Buenavista said Purok Depot has been found to be prone to landslides.
“Monitor your surroundings for cracks on the slopes all the time and report your observations to the authorities because your area is highly prone to landslides,†he told the residents.
He said residents must be wary of tension cracks, especially those that are leaking, and the direction of the soil erosion.
Buenavista said water usually flows through tension cracks and causes the soil to erode.
“But it entails the assessment of the barangay and municipal governments which will (approve) your new relocation site,†Buenavista said.
